If you’d like to upload the fundamental building blocks of my mind into your head, here’s what you should do:

  1. start reading to or listening to How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big right now
  2. read or listen to 12 Rules for Life
    • ok, I guess we need to have a discussion here. Everything you’ve heard about this book is wrong — you’re not entitled to an opinion about it, unless you’ve actually read it; at least read Scott Alexander’s review of it; JP might have a controversial persona attached to him, but the book is very light on politics and very heavy on timeless advice and great patterns of thought
  3. read or listen to The Varieties of Religious Experience
  4. read or listen to Can’t Hurt Me 3 times in a row
  5. read or listen to Extreme Ownership
  6. a month after (5) read or listen to How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big

Repeat reading / listening to those books you found most important 1-2 times a year.

Ok, let’s move on to a more conventional favorite book list:

Autobiographies / Memoirs:

Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History

Note: after adding this I learned that HH is littered with serious factual errors (a).

Best episodes: 01 - Alexander versus Hitler, 03 - The Organization of Peace, 05 - Meandering Through The Cold War, 09 - Darkness Buries the Bronze Age, 12 - Steppe Stories, 13 - Bubonic Nukes, 17 - Judgment at Nineveh, 19 - Apache Tears, 20 - (Blitz) History Under The Influence, 21-23 Punic Nightmares, 26 - (BLITZ) Addicted to Bondage, 33 - (Blitz) Old School Toughness, 34-39 Death Throes of the Republic, 50-55 - Blueprint for Armageddon, 61 - (BLITZ) Painfotainment

All of the episodes I listed are extremely important and I very strongly recommend listening to all of them (or probably, simply all episodes of Hardcore History). If you want to determine whether my recommendations are bs or not, listen to episode 61.

Miscellaneous podcast episodes:

A few of my most favorite songs ever:
